An Open Letter to the Libertarian Party: I Really Tried to Take You Seriously, For About a Week.
To my esteemed colleagues of the Libertarian Party,
Following the suspension of Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign and unable to board the Donald Trump train, I began to seriously look into the Libertarian Party as a viable option for the 2016 presidential election. This began with an excellent interview of Austin Petersen on the Glenn Beck program. Listening to Austin speak to his convictions, his dedication to the Constitution and his really solid libertarian values gave me some hope.
But then a few things happened:
First, I listened to the interview with John McAfee on The Glenn Beck Program, and if there has ever been a sketchier character in the history of American politics, I can’t identify them. And it’s never good for a presidential candidate to allegedly be target of a Belizian government assassination conspiracy.
Second, I listened to perennial Libertarian Party candidate former Gov. Gary Johnson, who advocated a simplified immigration system with no increase in border security, a deeply flawed notion. I even referred to his campaign page to make sure I correctly understood his platform. And in what I can only call a monumental lapse of collective judgment, you nominated him.
Third, I had the misfortune to see a candidate for chairman of the libertarian party performing a striptease live onstage courtesy of Twitter which sucked away any serious consideration of your party and with it any hope for the 2016 presidential election.
And finally, I looked away from the presidential campaign to the senatorial campaign to see if there was any trace of a serious political initiative among you and what do I find? Augustus Sol Invictus for Senate in Florida. Holy cow, this man is actually advocating for an insurrection within the United States.
Yes, like so many conservatives before me, I very briefly flirted with the notion of supporting the Libertarian Party, and thanks to the staggering level of buffoonery illustrated above, it lasted about a week. To constitutional conservatives in this country who are dissatisfied with the establishment Republican party, I’m sorry the libertarian party is not your answer. We need a true constitutionalist party in this country. We need to have a serious change in our system and in our culture. This is not what a serious political movement looks like.
